The first step is to activate your student account.

Once your account is activated, login to your email via the Portal.
Note: You can also access email via a POP, using software such as Outlook. This is only recommended on your own personal computer. Read the FAQs

About Student Gmail Accounts

All students are offered a free account for Google Apps @ unimelb, subject to the University's conditions of use. The University will use Gmail to contact you about administrative matters and you are expected to use Gmail to communicate with your lecturers and fellow students. It is important that you activate your account, and check your Gmail regularly.

You can access Google Apps from anywhere in the world using a web browser, as long as you have an active Internet connection.
