Access to University Central Email

All students of the University are offered a free email account, subject to the University's conditions of use. It is on a central mail server called webmail.student.unimelb.edu.au.

The University will use email to contact you about administrative matters and you will use email to communicate with your lecturers and fellow students. It is important that you activate your email account on this server, and check it regularly.

The first step is to activate your account. Once the account has been activated, you can use email by connecting to the mail server with the University's Webmail interface. You can also use email with a POP Email package, such as Outlook or Eudora. This is not recommended in a shared environment such as a computer laboratory, but is appropriate if you have your own computer.

Before you activate your account you should read and understand the Rules relating to the use of University Computing and Network Resources. The relevant University Rules and Regulations (Regulation 8.1.R7) can be found at:

Using Email at Uni

The recommended method for accessing the student email service is via the University's Webmail service at: https://webmail.student.unimelb.edu.au

Using this method will enable you to access your email from anywhere in the world using a Web browser as long as you have an active Internet connection. More information is available in the webmail users' guide.
