Students of the University Of Melbourne can use their laptops on campus to connect to the internet via either UniWireless or the Student Plug-In Network (SPIN).
Wireless networking is the technology that enables two or more computers to communicate using standard network protocols, but without network cabling.
UniWireless is available in most libraries, the Student Union and other locations. An up-to-date list of locations is available. The general rule of thumb is that UniWireless has been installed where ever students gather informally to study. So if you think you are in such a place, take out your laptop and see what happens. You may get a pleasant surprise.
- To get access, you will need a wireless card/built-in to connect to UniWireless and will need to configure you laptop settings by consulting the appropriate technical infosheet
- "IT literate" users, and those with other systems, can consult the information sheet University Networking "Just the settings"
- Required hardware and software can be purchased from the recommended shops listed here.

Handy tips:
- Mac MSN Messenger is not working on wireless. Use Adium as an alternative. See instructions.
- Skype is working on both Mac and Windows. Use proxy.

SPIN is a collection of network access points through which student laptop computers can be connected to the University network.
SPIN is available in the Legal Resource Centre (over 2800 in total), Land and Food Resource (Parkville), The School of Graduate Research and level 2 and 3 of the Baillieu Library (limited points).
- You will also require a blue Ethernet cable for the SPIN network.
- Students who wish to use an Ethernet cable to connect to the Student Plug-In Network (SPIN) can select the appropriate SPIN technical infosheet.
- There is a weekly limit on student downloads on both networks, for undergraduates this is at present 250Mb; for postgraduates it is 350Mb.
- Information on buying laptop or notebook computers is available here.
