The second stage of the Eastern Precinct project was open to all students on Monday, 8th September 2008.
The Eastern Precinct Project involves a major redevelopment of the existing ERC library as well as the creation of a series of new informal learning and social facilities in adjoining areas. It has been undertaken to provide improved research and learning environments for all students as part of the introduction of the Melbourne Model.
The first stage of the project, the ground-floor of the ERC library, opened recently and has already proved a success based on the large number of students using it regularly.
The second stage of the project, the Frank Tate Learning Centre, involves a series of exciting informal spaces and IT zones for individual and collaborative learning in the Frank Tate Building which lies alongside the ERC library. The design team has created a suite of unique spaces which promise to surprise students in many ways. Work continues on further stages of the project to refurbish other levels of the ERC library and develop the new Science Student Centre and these will be opened as they are completed.
The project has been a major initiative undertaken by the Office of the Provost (through Peter Jamieson), Information Services and Property and Campus Services.
